Building Smart Dreams with Science: "Building Dreams with Science, Enlightening Wisdom and Increasing Wisdom" —— Children’s Popular Science Reading Forum held in Beijing

   On May 21st, the children’s popular science reading forum "Building a Dream Scientifically, Enlightening Wisdom and Increasing Wisdom" was held in China Children’s Center.

  The forum invited scientists, popular science experts, writers and publishers from scientific research institutes, popular science institutions and well-known publishing institutions to discuss and study important topics related to popular science reading that parents, popular science lovers and workers in related industries are concerned about, with the aim of promoting and publicizing the spirit of scientists, promoting and advocating the effective development of popular science activities, guiding and encouraging young students to love reading, read good books and be good at reading, paying special attention to guiding students to strengthen reading in popular science knowledge, and implementing "learning science"

  Shi Yan, General Manager of Tongqu Publishing Co., Ltd. and Executive Dean of Tongqu Publishing Research Institute, delivered a welcome speech on behalf of the organizers. Shi Yan believes that children’s popular science reading can stimulate children’s curiosity and thirst for knowledge, cultivate scientific interest, establish scientific thinking, and enhance innovative consciousness and ability. She called on popular science workers, publishers, creators and promoters to actively participate in popular science reading activities, discuss key issues such as the promotion path of science education addition, pay attention to and participate in children’s popular science creation and reading promotion, create more high-quality popular science books for children, and help the rapid development of children’s popular science reading in China.

  Yu Dongyun, member of the Party Committee of China Children’s Center and director of the Foreign Exchange Center, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer. She pointed out that China Children’s Center has carried out a series of popular science reading promotion activities, hoping to promote the development of children’s popular science reading from the source, stimulate children’s enthusiasm for scientific knowledge, and promote the development of children’s popular science reading.

  Wang Yusheng, the former curator of China Science and Technology Museum and one of the 13 people who moved the collective award of "Silver Hair Knowing Broadcasting" in China in 2022, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Children are born scientists-popular science reading helps them grow into real scientists". Wang Yusheng quoted a famous saying about "Children are born scientists", and argued that although children are born scientists, they are not real scientists. To help children grow from "born scientists" to "real scientists", we should gradually guide them to read, observe, experiment, analyze, live and innovate according to the "rules of the game" of real scientists. In this process, popular science reading plays an important role that can’t be ignored. We should be discerning and teaching students in accordance with their aptitude, provide a good social atmosphere for the growth of popular science talents, find talents in innovative practice, cultivate talents in innovative activities, and unite talents in innovative undertakings.

  Yin Chuanhong, President of Popular Science Newspaper, Vice Chairman of China Popular Science Writers Association and Chief Expert of Forestry and Grassland Science of National Forestry and Grassland Bureau, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Popular Science Reading to Stimulate Imagination and Seeking Desire". Yin Chuanhong believes that popular science reading can be synchronized with children’s intellectual development. Science may be the most important field to highlight, find and solve problems. Popular science reading can help children increase their knowledge, wisdom and ideas.

  Wang Yuanzhuo, researcher of Institute of Computing Technology of Chinese Academy of Sciences and dean of Data Research Institute of Chinese University of Science and Technology, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Popular Science Creation and Popular Science Reading". Combining his own work and creative experience, Wang Yuanzhuo put forward specific suggestions on popular science creation and popular science reading. He believes that the creation of popular science should balance the relationship between speaking and reading, between artistry and scientificity, drive the construction of scientific knowledge with interest, and present it with content with temperature; Popular science reading should attach importance to parent-child reading, cultivate children’s interest in popular science reading, expand the extension of popular science reading and combine popular science reading with practice. In this way, the maximum effectiveness of popular science creation and popular science reading can be demonstrated.

  Nian Cheng, Deputy Director of China Institute of Popular Science and Adjunct Professor of Capital Normal University/University of Science and Technology of China, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Popular Science Reading and Cultivation of Innovative Talents". Zheng Nian introduced the connection and difference between "reading" and "popular science reading", and thought that popular science reading was scientific, imaginative, popular and forward-looking. He deeply analyzed the function, types and functions of popular science reading, the relationship between popular science reading and popular science education and practice, emphasized the important role of deepening popular science reading in cultivating innovative talents, advocated deepening the construction of popular science ability, constructing popular science reading content, deepening popular science reading ability and cultivating innovative talents.

  Su Qing, vice chairman of China Young Science and Technology Educators Association and director of the Science Communication Committee, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Children’s popular science reading: the most profitable investment for parents". Su Qing believes that popular science reading is an important window for children to know the world, an important enlightenment for children to explore the world, an important nutrition to nourish children’s life growth, and the biggest investment for parents. Through popular science reading, children’s vision, touch and hearing can be extended, and they can go back to the past and the future. The process of children asking questions, finding answers and finding answers is actually a process of deepening their cognition.

  Yang Xujie, editor of China Science and Technology Publishing House and director of China Popular Science Writers Association, delivered a keynote speech entitled "Between Scientific Reading and Scientific Literacy-Some Thoughts as a Publisher". Yang Xujie shared his three thoughts between popular science reading and scientific literacy from the publisher’s point of view: why popular science reading can improve children’s scientific literacy, how to improve children’s scientific literacy through popular science reading and how to improve children’s scientific literacy. Yang Xujie proposed to create a wealth of graded popular science books, taking into account the popularity and scientificity of popular science books, guiding popular science books with scientific concepts, radiating different readers in a graded form, and promoting popular science books through linkage between inside and outside the school.
