Vespa translates as "wasp" in Italian, and it is said that when the designer Corradino D’Ascanio showed his prototype to Enrico Piaggio, who saw the locomotive’s unique body shape and tentacle-shaped handlebars, he immediately exclaimed: "It looks like a wasp!" Everything became clearer when the roar of the engine was heard, and the name of the Vespa was determined.

On April 23, 1946, Piaggio filed a patent for a Vespa scooter with a 98cc single-cylinder two-stroke engine. For 75 years, Vespa has crossed borders and oceans, bringing Italian elegance to roads around the world. Piaggio has produced more than 150 models of Vespa scooters to adapt to changing needs and trends. As of 2021, a total of 19 million Vespa scooters have been produced. The iconic Vespa scooter is on permanent display at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Vespa, Lego introduced the Vespa 125. Introduced in 1960, the Vespa 125 scooter epitomised the spirit of liberalism and brought affordability and mobility to the younger generation. As always, color has played a very important role in ensuring the Vespa’s status as a fashion icon. Light blue was the color of the day and the only color available when the 125 was launched, and this light blue tone is very rare in Lego sets.

The LEGO Vespa 125 build-up set belongs to the LEGO Creative Variety Master series and contains 1107 parts. Its biggest highlight is to bring out the iconic sweet life atmosphere of the Vespa 125 through beautifully detailed design elements. The design team said, "The biggest challenge for us was to re-create the round elements on the Vespa body using LEGO parts. This will take some time, but once this is achieved, we can start adding all those small but important details". For more details on this set, please click on the video below to check it out!
